A Clinical Study on the Methemoglobinemia due to Ingestion of 4,4¢¥-Diaminodiphenylsulfone(D.D.S)





Abstract
An analysis of 25 cases of methemoglobinemia due to ingestion of 4, 4¢¥-diaminodiphen¡þylsulfone(D. D. S. ), who had been observed from January, 1973 to May, 1976 at Chung¡þnam University Hospital, was reported. Results are as follows:
1. The incidence was highest in patients less than 5 year of age (8 cases) and next in 21
to 30 year of age (6 cases). There was no sex difference. The majority of cases (72%) occurred during summer month.
2. The causes of intoxication were ingestion by accident in 11 cases, for suicidal purpose in 10 and misuse for skin disease in 4.
3. Common symptoms and signs were cyanosis, nausea, vomiting, semicoma, headache, dizziness, dyspnea and convulsion in the order of frequency. Consciousness disturbance was apparent in 6 cases out of 7 who ingested more than 2. 0 gram per square meter in a single dose.
4. Symptoms appeared within 12 hours after ingestion in 22 cases and the more the dosage, the earlier the onset.
5. Fifteen cases out of 16 who ingested less than 3.25 gram per square meter were improved. Three cases died, in 2 of them convulsion was noted.
